Winter weather can be tough for both humans and dogs, especially living in Boston! Cold temperatures, snow, ice, and harsh winds can make it difficult to safely walk your furry friend. Here are a few tips to help ensure a safe and enjoyable winter walk for both you and your dog.
- Proper Clothing: Dress yourself and your dog in warm clothing to protect from the cold. For dogs, consider a coat or sweater to keep them warm, and for your own safety, wear boots with good traction for slippery conditions.
- Check Paws: Before your walk, check your dog’s paws for any cracks or signs of frostbite. If necessary, put on some protective booties to keep their paws warm and dry.
- Short Walks: In extremely cold temperatures, consider taking shorter walks to prevent exposure to the elements. This also helps prevent hypothermia and frostbite in your dog.
- Stay on Paths: If possible, stick to sidewalks, paths, and roads that have been cleared of snow and ice. This makes the walk easier and safer for both you and your dog.
- Avoid Salt: Salt and other chemicals used to melt ice can be harmful to your dog’s paws. Try to avoid walking in areas where these chemicals have been used and wipe your dog’s paws clean after the walk.
- Stay Hydrated: Just like in the summer, your dog still needs plenty of water during the winter months. Be sure to bring water for both of you to drink during the walk.
- Watch for Signs of Trouble: Be on the lookout for signs of hypothermia or frostbite in your dog such as shivering, stiffness, or pale gums. If you suspect your dog is suffering from either condition, get them to a warm place and seek veterinary care.
Here are Paws we take dog walking safety seriously and with these tips in mind, you and your dog can also enjoy a safe and enjoyable winter walk. Just remember to take it slow and be prepared for the cold weather. Happy walking!
