At Paws to Consider, part of our dog walkers job often times entails making sure that your dog gets a proper meal! Whether we’re pet sitting or just providing general care with our dog walks, we don’t charge extra to ensure your dog is getting all the nutrients he or she may need, which is why we think it’s important to understand your dogs dietary needs.
The amount you feed your adult dog should be based on two main factors, size and energy output. A pet with a normal activity level would receive what is called “maintenance” energy. Lap dogs may require 10% of that, an active dog that plays/exercises outside may need 20 to 40% more, while working dogs like police, cattle, or guide dogs may need 50 to 70% more!
Even temperature may contribute to how much your dog needs to eat, keeping warm in cold weather can require a higher energy expenditure from your dog!
Treats should always be given in moderation and stay under 5% of the dogs daily diet intake.
As your dog gets older the main objective in feeding should be to maintain health and optimal body weight.
An active dog is a happy dog, and Paws to Consider can make sure your dog stays happy with daily dog walks in Jamaica Plain and the Boston area.
